Dreaming of Happiness

Strong women and moving destinies in the Ruhr District of the 1950s

The 1950s in Germany. The post-war years of hunger are history. Up and down the country, new construction is arising from the ruins. People buy VW beetles, head south for a vacation, go to an ice cream parlour, and listen to rock 'n roll from the juke box. The girls are wearing petticoats and ponytails; the boys studded jeans and Elvis-style hairdos. Yet the bitter consequences of the war can be felt everywhere. Its shadows are impossible to overlook. Much still lies in ruins, not least in people’s hearts.

Essen 1951. After fleeing the hell of war in Berlin, young Katharina has found shelter with the family of her husband, who is missing. But living together with a mother-in-law who always speaks her mind and takes a roll-up-your-sleeves attitude is not easy for a young woman who is eager for life. Katharina wants better conditions for herself and her daughters. Defiantly determined, she tries to escape her hardscrabble circumstances but finds herself torn between an affair with a rich doctor and her budding love for Johannes, a soldier who has returned from the war traumatized.

A woman caught between the past and the future, and a man without hope. Love and longing in disrupted times

The 1950s are a trending topic. From the ruins of the post-war period to the land of the economic miracle
