Love in Australia

A wonderful outback novel with a 1950s Flair
Elizabeth Haran's new novel is a touching family story that unfolds between the outback and England, spanning a period of over 20 years.

The outback, 1936. Willie McGregor has left England to seek his fortune down under. Together with his best friend, he is searching for gold in a remote area. Their only contact is with a clan of Aboriginals who occasionally set up camp nearby. Willie begins a love affair with a young Aboriginal who calls herself Nellie. When Nellie one day announces that she is pregnant, he is determined to provide for his child and see it regularly.

England, 1957. Young Kate is an exotic beauty and a celebrated film star. Suddenly, though, ugly rumours start to circulate. She flees from the press and her wicked husband to Australia to live with her father. Yet the small village in the outback is unfamiliar territory. Her father is a stranger to her, and nobody knows anything about her mother, Willie's deceased Greek wife.

Although a panic-stricken Willie tries to prevent it, one day Kate meets Nellie and her second daughter, who is to be taken away from her mother by the Australian authorities, since all Aboriginal children are to be raised in homes. This brings out Kate's courageous temperament, which in turn makes a big impression on Dusty, the young English teacher in Tibooburra. Kate is still married, however.

A young woman in search of her roots discovers a secret that was never meant to Surface
