The beginning of a new two-part story about an agent of the British Crown, an Arabian princess, and a magical cat

London, 1850. Unnoticed by the public, the Ministry of Final Affairs ensures that the souls of the deceased are transported to the realm of limbo. Jack has almost completed his trial employment period at the Ministry, when he is called up for his first field assignment – of all places on the grounds of Buckingham Palace, where a foreign delegation has been murdered. All the other agents are tied up elsewhere because a tunnel has collapsed during construction work on the underground.

Jack tries his best to meet the demands of his job, but when he’s attacked by his own shadow, things spin out of control. In order to save the only survivor of the delegation from the Arab Emirate of Ra's al-Chaima, he does something strictly prohibited: he transports a living person into the realm of limbo. But before he can bring the Emir's daughter back out again, the gate closes! From then on, he does everything in his power to find her and return her to the human world. In the process, he uncovers a conspiracy that could plunge the United Kingdom into the abyss.
