Love and betrayal set against the background of early whaling in the North Sea

Borkum in 1653. Joris Meyer, a 21-year-old from Borkum, has completed his training as a ship's master. In the summer, he is scheduled to take the whaler "Het Eiland" on a hunt as far as Spitsbergen. Whaling is a young business and excitement on Borkum is running high. His fiancée, Fenja, is worried because the renowned Captain Hansen has designs on her younger sister, and with Joris at sea they are without protection. Joris therefore asks his brother Nils for help. But Nils only takes advantage of the situation. While Captain Hansen attacks Joris's whaler, steals his catch, and destroys the ship, Nils convinces Fenja to marry him by making it appear that his brother is dead.

Yet Joris survives the attack and returns to Borkum on the very day of the wedding. A fight ensues between the brothers. Shortly afterwards, Captain Hansen also returns to finally eliminate his whaling rival Joris and make off with Fenja's sister. On the high seas, a dramatic fight ensues between Fenja and Hansen. The captain underestimates the young woman, and she is able to throw him overboard.
