A mother and her child, and a relationship where the roles are sometimes reversed

Little Nelly was only three when her father died. From then on she was alone with her mother. Yet Nelly's mother was ill. She imposed nonsensical prohibitions and instilled the little girl with a fear of infections and kidnappers. And she talked to Michael, who was not actually there but nevertheless knew everything about them. Nelly's mother suffered from schizophrenia: not everything she saw and heard was actually real.

Bravely, the little girl struggled through everyday situations. She endured the negative reactions of her fellow human beings, patiently suffered under exclusion in kindergarten and school, and often ensured that there was food on the table. When she was placed in a children's home, she was happy about the clear structures, the good food, and the homework supervision. But even there, something strange was going on.
While the entire setting of the story was threatening in the eyes of the young child, she also experienced many tender, affectionate moments that gave her strength – and the assurance of being loved.

An extraordinarily touching story about childhood
