You Were the Light in My Darkness
My Three Children, Cancer, and Me
Vera was 27 when they discovered she had cancer - and she had just given birth to her third child. Instead of enjoying a care-free summer with her family, this meant weaning the baby, going into a clinic for surgery, and undergoing radiation therapy. She was more concerned about her young children than herself; they were an important source of strength during this time. Two years later, and the cancer had been defeated. But just when Vera thought everything was finally OK again, she discovered a lump – just like her own – on her 4-year-old boy. It seemed the nightmare was starting all over. The pediatric cancer ward, constant MRIs and ultrasound, and a child that had already been thoroughly traumatized by clinics and his mother's illness. Then a big neck operation and a subsequent all-clear: the tumor was benign!
Cancer changed Vera's life. She learned to fight. And she learned to live. Fully and completely. And she has learned that even when you think you’ve put the worst behind you, your next challenge can be lurking just around the corner.
